Interview with JEN BRIERLEY— Corey Lopezs girlfriend

SURFING MAGAZINE: YOU’VE KNOW CORY A LONG TIME, RIGHT?
JEN BRIERLEY: We’ve been together for nine years.

DID HE THROW HIMSELF AT YOU? No.. but I didn’t really know a thing about surfing until we started dating, I’d see the magazines and think they were.. you know, like, the free magazines they make for any kind of weird sport. I had no idea surfing was that big? OR THAT COREY WAS THAT FAMOUS. Never.

WHAT KIND OF GUYS DID YOU DATE BEFORE HIM? I was a jock girl. I was a cheerleader, you know, dating team captains and stuff. Surfing just isn’t that big here—especially back then.

SO, NOW YOU’RE ON TOUR AND GET TO SEE HOW BIG SURFING REALLY IS. DO YOU ENJOY IT? It’s fun, you know. I hang out with a lot of other girlfriends. When the guys have a meeting, all the girlfriends, will be like, “Oh, we’re going to have a meeting too.” And we’ll go out and have drinks (laughs)

WHO’S YOUR BEST FEMALE BRO ON TOUR? Um, I’m really tight with Lyndie (Dupruis). Cory and Andy are really tight and she’s a cool chick, so we’re together a lot.

AND SHE’S BEEN ON TOUR FOR A FEW YEARS, SO SHE PROBABLY KNOWS ALL THE BEST SPOTS, SHOPPING SPOTS, THAT IS. Oh yeah (laughs), she definitely knows what’s up.

WHEN CORY COMPETES, ARE YOU ON IT, WATCHING? I don’t get too obsessed, because, well, athletes are so paranoid and weird about jinxing and stuff. Of course, I’m rooting for him and praying for him, like, “Please, God, send him another wave.”

DOES CORY HAVE ANY SPECIAL RITUALS BEFORE HEATS? LIKE, DOES HE ONLY EAT CHICKEN OR WEAR A CERTAIN COLOR BEANIE? No, I wouldn’t say that. But if he does something one day and it worked for him, he’ll want to keep it going. Like, if he kisses me before his heat and wins, he’ll want to kiss me for all his other heats. Silly stuff like that. But it’s not like we’re busting out Ouija boards and chickens or whatever.

IS HE A ROMANTIC? No! (laughs) Not even a little. He’s really cute and considerate, but he’s a man’s man. He can talk to you for hours about sports and fishing or whatever, but when it comes to romance, it’s not really his field. (laughs)

DO YOU STILL KNOW ANY CHEERS FROM YOUR HEY DAY? Of course I do, I can do one right now if you’d like (laughs)

HOW ABOUT SAVING IT FOR THE FIRST ‘CT ON THE GOLDIE? BUST OUT THE POM POMS AND EVERYTHING? Let’s go, let’s go, Looooopeeeeeey! Nah, he might get a little embarrassed. I think I’m loud enough for him as it is.
