Anaheim CA... 15 September, 2006: - - Ten surf stars were awarded the distinguished honor of being named to the 2006 Surfer Magazine reader poll by pro surfing fans at the star-studded affair hosted by E! Entertainment and X Games personality Sal Masekela and Hurley's Peter King (PK).
Perennial Surfer Poll recipient Cory Lopez was named to the 10th spot, reportedly edging out Australia's Joel Parkinson by a slim margin of votes to make the List. Lopez, who just opened-up his signature Nekton Board Shop, rounded out the Top 10 spot for the 2nd straight year. Cory's highest Surfer Poll placing was #3 in 2001. He also finished #3 in ASP's WCT rankings that same year after holding down the number one spot for a couple of months after his inaugural WCT win at Teahupoo. Fellow Floridian CJ Hobgood went on to win the tour that year.
In addition to his Surfer Poll placings, Cory has been ranked # 5 in Transworld Surf's Media Exposuremeter "All Time Rankings" from 1999 through 2005 for his over-all world-wide media exposure in print, broadcast (TV) and electronic mediums. In addition, Lopez has also been a 2x recipient of Surfer Magazine's 'Guts for Glory' Award for his barrel riding exploits at Tahiti's infamous Teahupoo.
10.) Cory Lopez: Reminiscent of the George Bush/Al Gore battle for the presidency in 2000, controversy and lawsuits aside of course, the competition to be named in the top ten men and top five women was hard-fought to say the least. Cory Lopez barely edged out Joel Parkinson to slide into the tenth slot. Gulf Coast surfers must have voted in force this year. Cory Lopez has been a fixture on the WCT for a long time now, but more than that, he's been a great roll model for all the surfers out there that don't have tremendous wave resources available to them. It just goes to show, a little passion can take you a long way.
